FILM Screenings at the National Park Visitor Center

5:15-6:30  "First They Killed My Father" – Loung Ung's memoir
"From a childhood survivor of Cambodia’s Pol Pot regime comes a riveting narrative of war, desperate actions, and the unnerving strength of a child and her family."

6:30-7:00  "Ephemera" Q&A with Filmmaker James Higgins.
A short, stop-action experimental film exploring the conflicting inner worlds of two close friends.


7:00-8:30  "Monkey Dance" Q&A with Monkey Dancer Samnang Hor. This film explores the role of traditional dance in linking  Cambodian-American children to their
parents' culture, as well as the pull of consumerism and American
culture.

8:30-9:00  Emphatic Force Dance, De Veth Modeling Show and “Ephemera”: A special presentation by the youth of Angkor Dance Troupe, ADAM Project and Cambodian Youth Development Program. Watch for members of the Angkor Dance Troupe in Jim Higgins’ stop action film “Ephemera”

5:00-9:00 Slideshow of Cambodian Countryside: A collection of scenes from the Phnom Penh and Siem Reap Providence of Cambodia. Cambodia has an area of about 181,040 square kilometers sharing an 800-kilometer border with Thailand on the north and west, a 541-kilometer border with Laos on the northeast, and a 1,228-kilometer border with Vietnam on the east and southeast. It has 443 kilometers of coastline along the Gulf of Thailand.

5:00-6:00 Community Art Project Clay Sculpture Demonstration: Master Artist Yary Livan will give hands on demonstration using air day sculpt clay forming a Traditional Cambodian Racing Boat. The boat will then be painted demonstrating traditional Cambodian design from 11th century architecture.

6:00-6:30 Painting Demonstration of Cambodian Countryside by Master Artist Khem Chantha: In 2001 Chantha's painting Economy Government was chosen for a major Franko-Phone exhibition in Canada. Because of its political subject matter, the painting was not allowed to leave Cambodia. Once in Canada, Chantha painted a second version of the work for the exhibition.

6:30-7:00 Master Menh Sothyvann Musical Performance

7:00-7:30 Angkor Dance Troupe Dance Workshop: The Troupe will offer a 30 minutes workshop, which they will teach the basic movements of Cambodia's elegant and ancient classical dance form, as well as lively and upbeat folk dances that celebrate everyday village life.

7:30-8:00 Angkor Dance Troupe Classical and Folk Dances Performance: History and culture come alive through modern interpretations of lively folk dance from rural Cambodia and dazzling renditions of classical court dance, an ancient Cambodian tradition dating to the ninth century A.D. Based in Lowell, the Angkor Dance Troupe was formed in 1986 by Cambodian refugees fleeing the Khmer Rouge government. The troupe is nationally recognized as one of the most experienced and accomplished Cambodian troupes performing in the United States. (www.angkordance.org)

8:00-8:30 Social Party Dance Demonstration: A quick lesson to get you dancing in the Cambodian social scene as quickly as possible.

ART & CULTURE: Cambodian cuisine, art, and culture around downtown Lowell.

National Park Visitor Center: The River Ambassador’s Program is offering Cambodian Arts & Crafts for all ages: Cambodian dolls, jewelry, and baskets, Komrong pka, Klah Kloke and other games, and Cambodian music and legends/ myths.
